Tax on newsprint

I read an article in the newspaper that China has slapped a five percent tax on chopsticks in an effort to slow deforestation. My immediate thought, as I glance at the mountainous pile of read newspapers stacked in a corner, was to wish more power to them. Then I'm thinkin we should do that, too.

We should tax newsprint. Newsprint is essentially a read once and discard product. Why encourage such wasteful activity? Why not save some trees? We can see deforestation in Canada:
Ontario deforestation

Tax newsprint.
Promote smaller newspapers and alternative sources of information.

And the money ... to Kyoto, of course. It is called tax shifting (and it's in Wikipedia).
