I have been reluctantly reading some American political blogs. The overall impression I am left with is the complete lack of competing political ideology. I am unconvinced that the US is a democracy at all. I'm reminded of the other cold war authoritarian countries that had the word "democratic" or "free" right in their names. How can a nation constantly at war not have a viable party representing peace? How can the most violent, not-in-a-state-of-civil-war nation in the world not have a social reform movement? How can the richest nation in the world not have an end-of-poverty party? How can there only be two major parties -- with little to differentiate between them?
I am forced to the conclusion that Americans, superficially nice people though they are, are absolutely oblivious to the moral indignation of the vast bulk of the world. Put another way, the rest of the world be damned.
And this brings me to our Alberta separatists. They believe that if you're sitting on a province that has everything then one should keep it all for themselves ... the rest of the country be damned. They claim they want more voice. More voice in what? ... Helping less prosperous regions of the country? I think not.
The separatists seem to have learned their values from south of the border. I suppose there is no right nor wrong in any of this but I certainly am glad I don't take a fancy to that smell. And I'm really glad I don't have to vote for it as the Americans do.
You know, we greens are a de-centralist bunch. We'd rather de-volve power than concentrate it. In fact, we'd de-volve power outward toward family, community, and yes, province, just because we believe it is more empowering of people and a furtherance of democracy. It is part of our Participatory Democracy principle set. Separation however is entirely non-cooperative and non-contibutory and doesn't take into account the community of the whole -- Canada.
Greens may never be in power and may never elect a single member of parliament. It is the will of educated and informed Canadians which will bring about a furtherance of the green cause. The concept of deliberately creating a green satrapy where, in microchasm, green 'will' prevails would simply be a coveting of power by dubious individuals characterized of humanities worst value sets. And that's a separatist.
In my mind most separatists (or those who have expressed separatist sentiments) in Quebec and in Alberta are merely expressing frustration over a perceived lack of democratic avenues open to their beliefs. I think also that the GPC offers up real options heretofore unseen by separatists. But make no mistake, power mongering, a characteristic of separatist-movement leaders, is not welcome in any party; everybody else is a good Canadian.
Such sentiments as "let those Eastern bastards freeze in the dark" and people such as Michaelle Jean, reflect the realities of Canada. Who better to be representative of Canadians than our citizens? But the power mongers, those who so perfectly represent the seven deadly sins, they do so foul the air.

Alberta Separatists

Great post!
ReplyDeleteWOW! What a misrepresentation of an Alberta separatist. Using that tired, old tool of scaring up images of being 'too American' is soooo predictable from the left.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't understand something, such as why someone would protest the insertion of a Quebec separatist as GG, just ask.
In the meantime, some free advice: when you start to feel resistance, stop pushing the Q-tip.
